The build up to the new season begins in earnest with the start of our indoor net sessions. These will be held in the sports hall of Fortismere School, located on Tetherdown, in Muswell Hill, London N10 1NE.

There will be 8 sessions at Fortismere, each running from 8-10pm, starting on February 21 and running through to April 10. The cost will be £5 per session, to offset some of the cost of hiring the hall.

Vintage North Midd Pic of the Week

Each week will be bringing you flashes of North Midd past. This week, we see the revered North Midd boys of '48, pictured with Warwickshire CCC. I have it on good account that the North Midd lads pasted the county side to corners of the ground on this day, with plenty of homers hit into Calthorpe.

Back for 2011 and more incisive than ever!!

This time....Sammy Shep!!!

Season Openers

The opening day of the 2012 season (May 12) will see the 1s at home to Shepherds Bush. The 2s  and 3s both face lengthy away trips to Barnes and Richmond respectively. The 4s make their debut in the 1987 League 1st division at home to Old Actonians 3s, while the 5s will travel to Wembley for their first competitive match in the 1987 League. The "official opening" of the new 3s square will be on May 19, when the visitors will be Ealing.

5th XI into the 1987 League for 2012

The 1987 League has confirmed that NMCC 5s will be admitted to Division 5 next season, subject only to our being able to find somewhere suitable to play our home matches. This is great news, and will mean that even more of our up and coming Colts, together with a seasoning of veterans(!) will be able to play competitive cricket week in, week out. Division 5 is where NMCC 4s started in 2007, and after 4 successive promotions they will play in Div 1 next year - just 1 promotion away from entering the MCCL League structure.

Ground Work on

the 3s Square

The square nearest to the main road, which is heavily used by Colts, the senior 3rd team and visiting Corporate teams, underwent major surgery on Sept 29th. This renovation, made possible by loans from Colts parents and other NMCC supporters, is intended to produce better quality, more durable pitches. The pronounced "saddles" at either end of the square have been removed, and the whole square has been levelled, covered with good quality loam and reseeded. The square should be ready for use by next May in time for the new season, but will take a year to settle down fully, so we won't see the full benefit until 2013.

2011 Pitch Ratings

The 2011 Pitch Markings, scored by the MCCL-appointed neutral umpires who stand in all our 1s matches, show once again a significant improvement as far as NMCC is concerned. Marks are awarded under 4 headings, of which the most important is "How Did The Pitch Play".

As recently as 2009, NMCC ranked 29 out of the 30 MCCL clubs on this measure - a stark reflection of how neglected our squares had been for many years. Since 2009, working with the Pavilion, we have invested substantially and consistently in works to improve the ground, using outside contractors where necessary, replacing antiquated machinery, and (thanks to the Pavilion) enjoying the huge benefit of  a full time groundsman all year round.

The results? Well, in 2010 our "How Did The Pitch Play" rank improved from 29 to 24, a modest improvement but one which showed that we were heading in the right direction. This year, reflecting above all the fantastic efforts of Groundsman Brian Cohen, we have shot up to 13th place, scoring more highly than Premier League clubs such as the  Brondesbury,  Richmond,  Twickenham and even the mighty Ealing!

NMCC also showed up well under the other 3 headings, where we had already made substantial progress in 2010. We ranked 8/30 in 2 of the categories (including the condition of the Outfield) and 11/30 in the other category.

With post season works due to start this week, we are hopeful of making further progress in 2012. Our aim is to banish NMCC's reputation (deserved though it was) for poor wickets, and to ensure that the quality of our pitches, helping us to attract and retain good players of whatever age.
