1s seal Premier League title

1s seal Premier League title

Nick Friend1 Sep - 18:29

For the third time in our 150-year history, The Midd are Middlesex Premier League champions

The 1st XI clinched a second Premier League title in six years last Saturday, amid crazy scenes.

Needing to win one of our final two games to seal the deal, defeat by Hornsey at The Midd on a wet afternoon meant that it was all but certain that victory at Stanmore - where we lost the 2023 title decider - would be required on the final day of the season.

After several near-misses since our 2019 triumph, that didn't necessarily appeal. But after the rain stopped in Shepherd's Bush, allowing Teddington to resume their run-chase against our only rivals for the 2025 title, an enthralling finish had the clubroom packed, all watching on a buffering stream that was struggling to cope with the sudden demand.

There were upwards of sixty people huddled around the TV when Teddington captain Alasdair Pollock hit the four that secured Teddington a four-wicket win and us the title.

It was a terrific race with Shepherd's Bush, who beat us at The Midd, before we won the away game last Saturday to set up this finale. Respect to them for the fight they put up.

But huge congratulations to Jacob Miltz and his team; one of the youngest Premier League-winning captains on record, alongside league legends Evan Flowers, Will Vanderspar and Joel Hughes.

Ten of the 23 players to represent the 1s this season have come through the club's junior system, with debuts for Ben Musikant and Keown Taylor-Duran.

A particular shout-out, though, for Ben Lockrose, whose 49 wickets are already an MCCL record for the period since the league went to a split of timed and overs games. He is one away from becoming the first NMCC bowler to 50 in a 1s league season since Brad Sculley in 2008.

A superb night was had by all, and we'll do it all again next Saturday, as we toast the end of the senior men's league season.

See you there.
