60 seconds with Will Vanderspar

Tom Nicoll16 Apr 2015 - 07:53

Vanders has returned to his home club to continue his prolific form from last summer. He previously played for NMCC for 8 years between '98-'06.

Welcome back Will!

It must seem a long time since you started off at the age of 7 at the Midd. What memories of those days stand out in your memory?

Thanks for having me back. The stand out memory for me was how simple cricket was when you are a kid. You just go out and try and whack every ball.

Which players/coaches are still around today that you played with back then?

There is a large contingent still going strong today: All of the Nicolls, Nick and Rob Brand, Connor and (Steve) Nurse, Evan Flowers, Adam Holmes, Alex Hill and many others.

Can you give a brief summary of your cricketing route over the last 5/10 years?

I played 5 years at Eton College and went through the Middlesex Academy. I then went on to Captain Leeds Bradford MCCU last year and played County 2nd team cricket for Surrey, Sussex and Glamorgan.

Last season you scored 525 runs at 40, what tips can you give to the club on batting in the Middlesex League?

Have a clear game plan and be positive in the way you bat, from footwork to running between the wickets.

From what you have seen at winter nets, how do you rate NMCC's chances in our second year in the Prem?

It seems like NMCC have a huge amount of depth in the squad, which is key and I believe the Midd will be pushing for the title come September.

What do you think is key in a successful team?

Commitment and discipline from everyone and everyone enjoying one anthers company.

What team are you currently playing for outside of the Midd and where do you want to take your cricket?

Currently playing for Glamorgan CCC 2nd team. My aim for this season is to sign a professional contract.

And finally, what do you like doing away from cricket? Can you explain some of these garments you have been seen dressed in, no doubt in a houseparty at Leeds.

Haha. Away from cricket, I love music and wearing ridiculous clothes.

Cheers Will, go large this season.
