Nick Winstanley – sad passing of a former leader of Midd Juniors

Chairman pays tribute to a man who launched the Club on a new trajectory

Chairman Steve Edwards writes -

In the early 1990s, the Junior section of North Middlesex Cricket Club was languishing. Nick’s wife Clare called me to say that perhaps our two boys would like to come along to the Club as Nick was taking charge of the section and was determined to build it up.

In short order Nick persuaded me to take on the coaching and managing of the youngest team. I don't remember having my arm twisted; his methods of getting people involved were very subtle and very successful. By the time he handed over the management of the section, we had about 100 boys playing and the Club had been launched on a new trajectory.

We now have 250 juniors playing regularly, including a thriving girls section.
The First XI, full of home-grown players, won the Middlesex Premier League last year. Three graduates of our junior section have won county contracts with Middlesex in the last two years, two of them having played for England Under 19s. The best player to emerge from our girls' section is in the Sunrisers team. When the history of the Club is written, Nick will have an honoured place in it, as he does in the memories of those many Club members who knew him and recognise all he did for the Club.

Nick was a cricketer through and through. Long after retiring from playing for the Midd, he always kept his cricket bat in his car because, he said ‘You never know when you might get the call’.
