After a washout last week, the 5s got their season back underway with a home clash against a good Chiswick side.
In beautiful sunshine, the Midd won the toss and invited the visitors to bat first, buoyed by the prospect of the returning Usman Mulla and Joe Bangerter to open the bowling. The Chiswick openers, one of whom was their skipper, got off to a steady start, punishing anything loose and getting away with two or three nicks to third man. Uz (2/19 from 8) was typically metronomic, though and eventually broke through, forcing a drag on from their captain and inducing an edge from the other opener, which was snaffled by Alban behind the timbers. Fair play to the guy that nicked off - he walked despite the umpire not giving it. Chiswick seemed well placed at drinks, albeit their scoring rate wasn't great, but the Midd put in a great shift from there to limit them to 160 all out.
First, Charles got one through the defences to bowl his man, a bizarre dismissal with the bail not coming off, yet the batsman agreeing to go once Alban turned the stump completely upside-down showing it had become completely stuck (again, massive credit to the Chiswick batsman - technically it's not out but he walked off). Then, Dykey (3/38 from 10) claimed three scalps in a lovely spell from the far end, pinning one batsman and seeing the other two taken at short cover. Roger Rebelo (2/14 from 4), who was also a live-wire in the field, then mopped up the tail, helped by Noman who bowled comfortably his best spell for the club.
After a tea made far more exciting by some additions from Yvette, we set out in pursuit of the target of 161, knowing it wouldn't be straightforward on a deck which was slowing up.
Our reply didn't get off to a great start, with Alban unlucky to feather behind on the drive, but Bishal and Ishan (17) ticked us along, defending well and taking few risks. Bish was bowled, before a couple of cross-batted shots put us in a touch of bother at 60/4, still over 100 to get. Richard Nicoll (48) and Charles came together, batting watchfully in putting on 59 for the fifth wicket, with Chiswick still in the game but unable to break through. Richard batted really nicely, with some notable boundaries through the leg side. With the Midd finally in a position of dominance, needing 42 off 12 overs, the skipper endured 90 seconds to forget, first running Richard out taking on a second which wasn't there, before nicking a wide one the very next ball.
Fortunately, blushes were spared as Noman (31 not out) clubbed some quick runs with two large bombs, supported well by Rebelo. All in all, this was an excellent win. We were good in the field, only dropped one catch, bowled well and batted with the necessary application to chase a small but tricky target.
The 5s have some momentum moving into the timed games from next Saturday. My thanks in advance to Richard, who takes the side next week as I complete my finals.
