U13s and U15s in Area Finals; All Stars/Dynamos start

Weekend Summary

Scores from a weekend that, despite weather frustration for the 2s, 4s and 5s, turned out pretty well in the end. Dramatic wins for the 1s in the League on Saturday and the T20 Cup on Sunday, a convincing win for the 3s and defeat for the Sunday friendly XI.

The 1s win at Brondesbury on Saturday was described by our esteemed and highly experienced scorer/reporter, Mark Williams, as “the most exciting limited-over game that your correspondent has ever watched”

Also, early success to report from the Junior Section – see later.

1st XI vs Brondesbury - NMCC won by two runs
NMCC 115-9 (30) v Brondesbury 113ao (29.5) - Evan Flowers 27, Connor Nurse 3-7, Alex MacQueen 3-17

There was a truly remarkable finish to this game. Here is Mark Williams report on the last 16 balls of Brondesbury’s innings chasing the Midd’s 115 with the game reduced to 30 overs per side.

“16 balls remaining, Brondesbury required 10 to win with 5 wickets in hand. The left-arm spin of Nurse was not introduced until the 26th over, and he bowled a quiet first over. His second was a double wicket maiden and turned the game on its head: Schoff’s impressive innings was terminated just in time when he was bowled through the gate (106-6: 20: 27.3) and Scurrah was astonished to be bowled round his legs second ball (106-7: 0: 27.5). O’Driscoll crucially now bowled a miserly penultimate over conceding just 2 runs during which Alistair Wilkinson was thrown out by Parslow at deep-extra-cover attempting a second (107-8: 1: 28.5). Two balls later the target was down to 5 after a couple of byes, but Anthony Wilkinson went on the attack, attempting to sweep Nurse, and was adjudged lbw (110-9: 8: 29.3) after a patient invaluable innings. Another two balls later, Heathfield kept his nerve with a flat accurate throw from wide long-off which was too quick for the ageing Nelson attempting a second, and The Midd had triumphed by 2 runs with a ball to spare (113 all out: 1: 29.5). With a mixture of relief and exhilaration, the visitors left the field, but they had showed enormous character to keep fighting to the end, and Nurse’s figures spoke for themselves (2.5-1-7-3): showing the merit of bowling straight at the ‘death’. The hosts were inconsolable, for they had dominated all but the final 15 balls of the game, and outplayed the reigning champions.”

T20 Cup: 1st XI vs Winchmore Hill - NMCC won by one wicket
Winchmore Hill 119-8 (20) v NMCC 120-9 (19.1) - George Garrett 3-14, Manan Parmar 57*

An equally tense match on Sunday away at the Hill with the Midd nearly doing a Brondesbury by losing late wickets with very few runs needed for victory. Manan Parma batted superbly until he was carelessly run out with victory in sight. The last pair of George Garrett and Nico Smith kept their cool and saw us home with 9 down and 5 balls to spare.
