From the 5th XI Captain
In 2017, I assume captaincy of the 5s, as we look to rediscover the form of two years ago, when we were promoted to Division Four of the 1987 League. I would like to thank Arjun Gole, who leaves his post as 5s skipper, for his hard work and dedication over the past twelve months and for his unwavering passion and commitment throughout one of the most difficult seasons of availability the club has experienced.
Although the 5s were relegated last year, there is plenty to look forward to this summer. The ultimate target, as a young, ambitious side, is to be promoted from a newly-enlarged, sixteen team Division Five. More importantly, though, my aim is to uphold the ethos of this team, implemented so successfully by Arjun and, before him, Richard Nicoll. We try to play hard, competitive cricket, yet also ensure that players, officials and supporters gain great enjoyment from representing the club, whilst conducting themselves in a respectful and sporting fashion.
One of the reasons captaining the 5s holds such great appeal is the chance I have to oversee the development of Colts and younger players. The club has a proud history of bringing through young talent, with many of the current 1s and 2s players beginning their NMCC ‘careers’ in the 5s. This year, the desire to provide opportunities for Colts, as part of a team with experience of Senior cricket, remains strong. I would like to thank Ollie Buxton and Richard in advance for their time, effort and ongoing assistance in supervising this link between Colts and Senior squads, one which hopefully will be greater than ever in 2017.
Finally, I would be pleased to welcome any newcomers to the club, regardless of age or experience. If anyone is interested in representing the Midd, even on an irregular basis, I would be delighted to hear from you.
Here’s to a successful season.
